Review: White Cat (Curse Workers #1)
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Holly Black writes clean, polished prose that hugs the twists and turns of White Cat's plot very closely. It was hard to put this book down once I got started because I had to know where she was going. Also, there's plenty of sexy stuff which is always a plus for me.
I couldn't bring myself to give this a five star review though. Even though the concept is original and I can't say I'm not interested in reading other books in the series, I did find it hard to love the characters. Most of them are fairly hardened criminals without many endearing qualities. Also, once I got to the halfway point, I started feeling like the supernatural powers of the curse workers were enough to patch any plot hole. That's not enough for me. I know this isn't the type of book you pick up for a hard dose of reality, but even when I really want to suspend my disbelief, it's hard to swallow an explanation along the lines of, "Well, this could have been tragic, but thank goodness we invented this magical device that prevents this equally impossible dreadful fate!"
