Retreat to move forward

The source of my most recent writing angst is word count anxiety. I found myself approaching the end way too fast. Something was missing, but I couldn't figure out what. Then, it hit me: I didn't have enough development at an earlier point. I know word count is one of those things you shouldn't obsess about ever, especially when the manuscript isn't even complete yet, but, in this case, thinking about it kept me from creating the longest, most boring ending ever---so far anyway. I hope this means I'm unblocked for the rest of the week.
