Random Sunday Thoughts
Going into a new week, I'm reflecting on some of the excitement that we've had in our first 12 days of 2020. A lot of people have been asking the question, "Does this mean we get to relive the 20s?" Given the decorating scheme at Trump's penthouse in Manhattan, maybe we are in for another Gilded Age. I just have a bad feeling that even if flapper dresses don't return, the Great Depression might.
Of course, the other thing that has been on my mind is all the fist-shaking at Iran. We have nuclear weapons. They have nuclear weapons. People with access to the codes on both sides are totally unstable.
Meanwhile, I'm trying to find some balance between reading, writing, and working the day job. Like a lot of writers, I actually work in a demanding profession that means something to me, and that means follow-up with clients, record keeping, professional development and business development. Sandwiched in between all of that, I try to have something resembling a personal life. Doing okay on being a dog mommy, but I still haven't made it to the gym or yoga classes.
I have quite the growing TBR pile of books going now though. At least I won't have to think too hard about things to review here.
- Leila Aboulela's Bird Summons from Grove Atlantic Press just got approved in my NetGalley queue. It looks a bit heavy. Not sure what I got myself into with that one, but you will know soon. I do enjoy women's fiction from a different world view.
- I'm still finishing up Annie Beaton's Year of Positive Thinking by Mink Elliott. This just hasn't been a good weekend for reading.
- Tattered Cover on Colfax sent their weekly email about upcoming events and Peggy Orenstein has an event there on Friday for her new book Boys and Sex. I'm behind the times. I totally missed Girls and Sex. I'm not sure what I'll learn when I read those, but I can say right up front that everyone should be having some---unless you're asexual and you do . . . well, what you do. And yes, the books are blue and pink, respectively. We can only come so far.
- I'm behind the curve a bit on In The Dream House, but it's still recently published and it sounds delightfully weird. I would try describing it right now, but I have a feeling I would step on someone's buzzword in the process, and I've already antagonized someone online today. Sorry.
I think I'll get back to drinking my wine and digging my fall-out shelter.
