Review of Marie Antoinette: The Journey

Marie Antoinette: The JourneyMarie Antoinette: The Journey by Antonia Fraser

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Antonia Fraser's compassionate portrait of Marie Antoinette is detailed to a fault. For example, up until the moment the French queen's head rolls, Fraser provides us with verbose descriptions of what Her Majesty wore. I love fashion and admit that it was fun to live vicariously through some of the more glamorous moments in Marie Antoinette's life through Fraser's vivid detail.

Fraser's insights into the political role of the Queen in the French monarchy as well as Marie Antoinette's upbringing transform Marie Antoinette into a victim of unfortunate circumstances instead of the decadent brat she's often thought to be. This was an interesting read, but it was also about 200 pages too long.
