Book Review: Spellbound by Cara Lynn Shultz
Spellbound by Cara Lynn Shultz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Emma moves in with her Aunt Christine in Manhattan after her drunken stepfather almost gets them both killed in an accident. Emma hopes she can start her life over. Aunt Christine pulls a few strings to get her admitted to Vincent Academy (known as "Vince A" for most of the book), and within a week or so of arriving in NYC, Emma is the new girl on the block. She meets some cool friends at Vince A, and an incredibly hot guy, Brendan. Unfortunately, Vince A also has its share of rotten people: Anthony, the sexist hulk, and Kristen, the overbleached/overtanned mean girl.
Even though Emma is determined to avoid forming attachments to members of the opposite sex, she finds herself drawn to Brendan in a way that feels supernaturally powerful. Thanks to the resident witch in her chemistry class, Emma soon learns that she and Brendan are soul mates, and they're bound by an ancient curse. Will Emma and Brendan overcome centuries of tragic love? You'll have to read the book to find out.
There's a lot to keep you entertained in Spellbound. Emma is compelling, as is the "resident witch" Angelique. Cara Lynn Shultz's sense of humor also keeps the story from sinking too far into melodrama. Definitely good for the beach or for hiding from annoying parental units.
