I do it my way
This is going to sound weird, but my mini-meltdown this week reminded me that I'm not a run with the herd kind of girl. I do my best work when I get to do things my way. For some parts of my life, I just have to suck it up and adapt. My day job is what it is and has certain requirements and constraints I have to deal with, but that's part of the reason I get paid. If I were to stop getting paid, I wouldn't put up with any of that anymore. Also, there's all the other annoying stuff like doctor's appointments, bills, the unwritten rules of fashion. It's all, you know, life.
Writing is something I do for me though. I don't do it for anyone else. I mean, I hope I have an audience at some point, but for now, the process is all about what I want to do, and if it's not fun, there's no point. So I'm not going to worry about "the rules" of writing anymore---whatever they happen to be today. I'm not going to worry about what a critique partner who has just discovered her hatred for adjectives says. I will finish my current manuscript and write my next one the way I should write everything: my way!
I had some help reaching this epiphany and I have Tahereh Mafi to thank for her brilliant post about critique partners (or lack thereof). P.S. Keep an eye out in your local bookstore: Tahereh's first novel Shatter Me is set to hit the shelves on November 15! Tahereh, if you're reading this--I want one!
